This is the Halo Effect. It is one of the most seductive cognitive biases in organizational psychology, and it operates as a destructive force inside quality management systems. The mechanism is simple: a single point of genuine excellence casts a glow over unrelated processes. The glow is an illusion, but the organization treats it as evidence.
The bias was first described by psychologist Edward Thorndike in 1920, when he observed military officers rating soldiers highly on unrelated traits like intelligence and loyalty simply because they had a positive physical impression. In quality management, the pattern is identical. One isolated success creates a shortcut that tells evaluators they do not need to verify independent variables.

Consider a supplier with seven years of tenure and a 99.2% on-time delivery rate. They have never caused a line stoppage. Because of this track record, the quality team gradually reduces incoming inspection from 100% to skip-lot sampling, and eventually to a state of unwritten trust.
